Hotel Transylvania, Wreck It Ralph
It's been a great stream of cartoon movies recently. The kids and I watched Hotel Transylvania few weeks back (it was impromptu, on a school day!) and it was really, really great. It was a touching story about a father's love for his daughter, and how he wants to shelter her from the bad world (humans). The comedy was right on the money, and adults and children alike were laughing out loud in the theatre. No slapstick comedy in that movie! We would love to watch it again. Interesting note, the voices behind this movie were Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg (SNL), and Kevin James (of Zookeeper fame).
Today we watched Wreck it Ralph. I'm not sure who enjoyed it more, us or the kids. Probably us. If you used to play Nintendo games as a kid (i.e. during the time of Pacman, Sonic, Mario Brothers, Street Fighter), you will love this movie because the characters of these games make cameo appearances all throughout. Our kids couldn't really appreciate the appearances of King Koopah and Zangief, but we loved it.
But beyond the special appearances, this movie was incredibly touching. It's about a "villain" in a video game (Ralph) that wants to be "good", but nobody will let him. He tries to find a way so that he will be respected and treated as a hero, and ends up in another arcade game, Sugar Rush. There, he meets a little girl that is an outcast in the game for being a "glitch"(Vanellope). He finds out the truth about who she really is, and helps her find her way back. There were a lot of twists in this movie, but no loose ends. It was really, really wonderful. One of the best movies I've watched in a while. As of today it is showing in both Alabang Town Center and Festival Supermall. Justin checked BTW, and the game Wreck it Ralph is currently available in Itunes.
The movie features the voices of John Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch (of Glee) .
Best line of the movie *tear* -- "I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be, but me."
